Early designs for Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb included an appearance by Rif's grandfather, shown here in a concept sketch by Eric Blumrich. I think he was going to appear in a flashback, but I'm not sure.

The caption mentions a "quarter" necklace that Rif's grandfather gave to Rif. The pendant on this necklace was originally an old US quarter dollar coin, but in the final game and the comic strip the "pendant" is a gold ring.
